Description |
Two-harness loom, originally a four-harness loom for making coverlets and other fine work, it was converted to a two-harness loom for rug making. In the late 1920s, Nellie McDorman learned to weave rag rugs from Carrie Lam in her home community of Lilly, Rockingham County. After her husband's death, and with seven children to support, Nellie McDorman saw rug weaving as an opportunity to make money to support her family. Her daughter, Naomi McDorman Swartz, also interested in weaving, learned alongside her mother and continued to weave actively throughout her life. Nellie McDorman's mother, Lydia Reedy, moved back to the homeplace and joined her daughter and granddaughter in the work. Over the succeeding decades many members of the family have helped with the weaving business, beginning as children and sometimes continuing as adults. |
