BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE: The Rhodes family moved to the Shenandoah Valley from Lancaster, PA in the late 1700's. Frederick Anthony Rhodes was born near Dayton in Rockingham County in 1819 and was a very active member of the Mennonite Church. Frederick was ordained a Deacon in 1852 and would have been a Deacon for 29 years when he wrote this diary of 1881. There is another diary written by Frederick in 1867, but the museum is not in possession of this diary. However, Raymond C. Rhodes has a publication titled The Frederick Anthony Rhodes Diaries of 1867 and 1881. Excerpts of both diaries are included in this publication, which is available in the HRHS museum genealogy library.
