BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE: Philip Fix was known to be an arithmetic teacher residing in Augusta County and it is believed he may have used this hand-written lesson book in the classroom. Philip Fix was an American Revolutionary War veteran and was drafted from Augusta Co. in 1781. He was a rifleman and engaged in the battle of Yorktown. After the war, Mr. Fix resided in Augusta County until 1832, before moving to Rockbridge County shortly before his death in 1834. The donor, William H. Acker, is a descendant of Philip Fix.
