BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE: Daniel Wetsel determined through trial and error the strains of corn best adapted to lowland and up-land cultivation and to wet and dry seasons. From year to year he added other farm and garden crops native to this area. Study of weather patterns and trends had long formed one of his active interests and he enjoyed a wide reputation for his forecasts and conclusions. Mr. Wetsel was a pioneer in advocating soil improvement through legume crops, commercial inoculation and proper chemical fertilizers. His knowledge and advice was much sought after by farmers, a gratis service that actually rendered him unofficially the Shenandoah Valley's first county farm agent. The Wetsel Seed Company store was opened in 1911 by Daniel M. Wetsel and his son Arnold Wetsel. SCOPE AND CONTENT: This collection has items related to the Wetsel Seed Company.
