BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE: Scrapbooks became popular in the 1800's and are used as a method of preserving, presenting, and arranging personal and family history in the form of a book. Typical memorabilia include photographs, printed media, and artwork. SCOPE AND CONTENT: This collection has personal scrapbooks. Scrapbooks are not normally processed by the museum, but are stored in the same format as they are donated. Most scrapbooks with newspaper clippings have a handwritten inventory list in the front. Helen Kiefe Victorian scrapbook with decorative cover, contains cards, magazine clippings, etc. Ruby Kiser Layman WWII Scrapbook assembled by Ethel Layman. Her three sons, Lawrence, Cecil & Russell, served in WWII. Donor was married to Lawrence. Inventory provided. Also have four folders with copies of loose newspaper clippings from WWII. Allen Litten Scrapbook of the City of Harrisonburg compiled while a student. Photographs and newspaper clippings along with handwritten historical notes. Wooden Cover with drawing of city crest. 1949 Loewner Family Five scrapbooks, from 1909 - 1981 L. Maxine Kratzer Miller WWII era scrapbook with newspaper articles compiled by donor's mother. Holly Heath Mullin Scrapbook compiled by Norma Anne Jarrels, Port Republic High School, 1947 through 1950. It appears to have been completed for a school assignment as there is a notation from a teacher in the front. Eleanor Price Price family photo album Margaret Priode Scrapbook with newspaper clippings, 1969 - 1984, inventory included. Julius Ritchie 12 scrapbooks with newspaper clippings, 1940's through 1990's. Two scrapbooks concerning the 1940 explosion in Harrisonburg. Inventory provided. Richard & Nancy Sedwick Scrapbook with clippings of a newspaper column titled Valley Folklore, written by Elmer L. Smith from Madison College. The Valley Folklore columns appeared to have been published in several local newspapers. 1967 - 1970 Shelby County Historical Society Three scrapbooks from the Switzer/Richardson family, 1931 - 1941 Dorothy Simmers Six scrapbooks with local newspaper articles, 1968, 1971, 1977, 1982, 1993.
