John Edwin Roller was born 5 October 1844 near Mt. Crawford, Va., the oldest child of Peter S. Roller and Frances Sidney Allebaugh Roller. He served in the Confederate Army, first in Co. I, 1st Virginia Cavalry, then later as a member of Blackford's Scouts and as an engineer officer. He graduated from Virginia Military Institute in 1863. He practiced law in Harrisonburg from 1867 until his death 10 August 1918. He also served in the Virginia Senate, 1869-1873.
Oliver Brown Roller, brother of John Edwin, was born 5 May 1854. He graduated from VMI in 1876, then studied law at the University of Virginia. Admitted to the bar in 1878, he practiced in Harrisonburg as the senior member of O. B. Roller & Martz (Edward C. Martz was his partner). He was active in the Virginia militia, serving first as captain of the Harrisonburg Guards and later as a lieutenant colonel during the Spanish-American War. He later moved to Staunton, Va., and died there 28 September 1912.
SCOPE AND CONTENT:
An ongoing collection of materials relating to brothers John Edwin Roller and Oliver Brown Roller, both whom practiced law in Harrisonburg. At present, the collection consists of a postcard and transcription of postcard to John E. Roller, 10 June 1884, from I. M. B; and a postcard to Oliver B. Roller, 9 September 1887, from P. P. Shiflett. Both postcards concern legal cases
