BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE: Calligraphy is a fancy penmanship, an especially highly decorative handwriting, with a great many flourishes.
SCOPE AND CONTENT:
7 calligraphy cards each bearing a name and birthdate of family members of the Maloneys and Windles. One card is a marriage card with wedding date and reverend's name. Each card is done in decorative calligraphy and further enhanced with floral decoration also done in pen and ink. Transferred from museum acc. # 95.8
Booklet was made by Emma Shirley for her mother, Mrs. Christian (Bettie) Shirley, New Market, VA. This is a 6 page scalloped edged paper booklet held together by two satin ribbons. Hand-lettered and decorated cover is done in gold ink. Inside is a floral painting in pinks, blues, green and gold with butterflies. Also inside is a floral drawing in gold ink on fabric and decorated with four satin bows in corners. A card accompanying reads, "Compliments of Emma".
