John W. Cline was born in 1847 near Staunton, Virginia. After the Civil War he was a Deputy Sheriff for Augusta County and this collection contains many notes he collected along with the receipts for payment. Mr. Cline was a farmer for many years in Bridgewater and for a number of years he was president of the Planter's Bank in Bridgewater.
John Cline was married to Virginia Smith Cline and they had three children: Florence Cline, Alvin Cline, and Solon Cline.
