Dr. Walter M. Zirkle was born on July 14, 1930, in Harrisonburg, and was the son of the late Walter M. Zirkle Sr. and Mae Bostick Zirkle.
He was a graduate of Harrisonburg High School, received a BS degree from Randolph-Macon College in 1952 and received his medical degree from the Medical College of Virginia in 1956. He then completed a surgical internship at Union Memorial Hospital in Baltimore, Md. He served as a captain in the U.S. Army Medical Corps at Fort Gordon, Ga. for two years followed by a four-year residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Medical College of Virginia. He returned to Harrisonburg to start private practice in 1962.
